If you're very, very good and you eat a bunch of vegetables and legumes full of protein and beta carotene and that kind of stuff, you earn, by all rights, a dessert. Now, I didn't make these things. They are from Joan's on Third in LA and I had to accompany my husband who had to try the grilled cheese short-rib sandwich that had recently been featured in Bon Appetit.
As luck would have it, when I approached the dessert counter, there stood on a tall display dish a buttermilk layer cake. I became almost giddy.
